The baffles are thin plates positioned for the entire length of the tube bundle. They have two primary functions--Sustain the tube bundles and increase the heat-transfer by changing the flow of the fluid and generating turbulence.
Effect
The function of the baffle is to increase the flow rate of the fluid in the shell side and increase the degree of turbulence, improve the heat transfer efficiency, increase the heat transfer coefficient of the shell side fluid, reduce scaling, and at the same time play the role of supporting the heat exchange tube.
Structure Type
Commonly used baffles include arc-shaped and disc-annular baffles. Discs and annular baffles are not easy to clean due to their complicated structures. They are generally used in situations where the pressure is high and the materials are clean. Their structures are shown in the figure below.
The structure of the arc baffle is as shown below:
There are three main types: single arc, double arc and triple arc (as shown below), among which single arc baffles are more commonly used.
Baffle Notch
The height of the arcuate notch of the baffle should be such that the flow rate of the fluid when passing through the notch is similar to that of the fluid flowing transversely through the tube bundle. Generally, the notch height h is 0.2~0.45 of the nominal diameter of the shell, and h=0.2Di is often taken. The baffles should generally be arranged at equal intervals. The baffles at both ends of the tube bundle should be as close as possible to the shell side inlet and outlet nozzles. The minimum spacing of the baffles should be no less than 1/5 of the inner diameter of the cylinder and no less than 50mm. The maximum spacing It should be no larger than the inner diameter of the cylinder.
The arrangement of the arcuate baffles is also very important. In horizontal heat exchangers, the notches of the baffles should be arranged horizontally up and down. If the shell-side fluid is gas and contains a small amount of liquid, the notches should be facing upwards. A liquid port should be opened at the lowest point of the baffle for drainage, as shown in (1) below; if the shell side fluid is liquid and contains a small amount of gas, a baffle with a gap facing downwards should be opened. Open the air vent at the highest point, as shown in the figure (2) below; when the shell side medium is gas and liquid, or the liquid contains solid materials, the baffles should be vertically distributed on the left and right, and the liquid vent should be opened at the lowest point of the baffle. mouth, as shown in Figure (3) below.
Baffle Plate Fixed
The baffle is fixed by the tie rod and the distance tube. The thread at one end of the tie rod is screwed into the tube plate. The baffle is positioned by the distance tube. The last baffle is fixed by the nut at the end of the tie rod. The structure of the tie rod and distance tube is shown in the figure below:
There are also connection structures that use a combination of threads and welding or full welding as shown in the figure below:
